The Greater Swiss or “Swissy” is a large and powerful breed appreciated for his calm, even temperament. His appearance is muscular, measuring 25 to 28 inches at the shoulder in height and weighing 85-110 at adulthood. The Swissy is a very social, loyal and affectionate dog that thrives on being integrated into his family’s life and home.

As a big dog with a “big” personality it is important that the members of the Swissy’s family are regarded as his leaders. A young Greater Swiss will grow to a considerable size and strength at a relatively early age and it is necessary that as a young dog he is secure and comfortable with his place in the family hierarchy. This can be achieved by attending puppy classes to develop his social skills with other dogs and people and a firm fair approach to training from an early age.

Originally used as a watch and draft dog he is vigilant, self-assured and naturally enjoys carting activities.

As a multi purpose-working breed, he thrives on having a job to do and also enjoys tracking, obedience, swimming and hiking.

It is important that a Greater Swiss receives regular exercise, although given his substantial size and structure high impact running should be avoided particularly when he is young and still developing.

A Swissy is a beautiful stately dog and makes an outstanding companion to a family with space. Despite his size, he is renowned for his affectionate nature and gentleness towards children and other animals.
