The smallest of the Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Entlebucher is a medium sized dog with a compact, solid physique and friendly alert expression. The average dog will measure between 18 and 20 inches to the shoulder and weigh between 18-30 kg.

He has a joyful, happy-go-lucky personality and is an interactive sociable dog that always likes to be close to his “pack” and involved with the family “goings-on." Originally a cattle herder he is active, alert and has the ability to size up a situation at lightening speed. His speed, intelligence and willingness to please makes him a very competitive choice for those owners interested in agility, flyball or obedience training. He is also a good tracker and the breed is often used for Search and Rescue in the Swiss Alps.

In the home environment the Entlebucher is totally devoted to his owners. He can be slightly aloof of strangers and will see it as his duty to guard the house and it’s occupants. However, early socialisation will ensure that he readily accepts friendly visitors and his loyalty to his family means that he will rarely roam. He is a playful dog and makes an excellent companion for older children. He is also good with other household pets providing he has been introduced to them at an early age.

He needs regular exercise to remain in peak condition and loves nothing better than to   spend time with his owner playing Frisbee, ball or retrieval games. He is also a good swimmer and will readily fetch objects from water. A versatile breed in a handy size, the Entlebucher packs a lot of personality and makes an excellent companion for an active family.
